Parent Coaching That Helps
Finding Your Clear Path Forward
You Shouldn’t Have to Navigate Special Needs Parenting Alone.
You are worth it. Your future is worth it. Taking care of yourself is possible, even with all the demands of life. Even when parenting a student or adult with Autism or Asperger’s.
As a parent of a student or adult with Autism or emotional health challenges like OCD, Anxiety, Depression or Schizophrenia, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed by your loved one’s needs or behaviors. A search on the www. points you in many different directions, with many sounding like qualified experts. It’s hard to know who to trust, what step is needed now and what will actually help you as the parent as you try to help your son or daughter with behaviors or emotional health challenges.
When I first became a Certified Parent Coach over a decade ago, Autism and children’s or adult mental health weren’t as prevalent when it came to coaching for parents. Coaching back then seemed more centered around how to parent a substance-abusing teen or an oppositional defiant teen, commonly referred to as ODD. In the past, parent coaching often focused on holding boundaries or even tough love, as we used to call it. Coaching now is more varied and specialized and at times can have a therapeutic feel.
What is the Purpose of Parent Coaching
The purpose of parent coaching is to support your identified goals as the parent in a positive collaborative process designed to lead to success. With coaching, good intentions are less likely to fall by the wayside. Parent coaching doesn’t have to be about your parenting. Supportive parent coaching might also focus on your goals for yourself which in turn have a ripple effect including a positive impact on parenting responsibilities.
What are the benefits of the right type of Parent Coaching
The benefits of the right type of coaching are numerous. The bottom line, you get the support you need. Sometimes a parent will engage in a type of coaching that doesn’t help and leaves them feeling discouraged at not meeting their goal. Some parents end up feeling more guilty than ever about their parenting. Just as there are types of coaching, there are many kinds of issues in parenting. One needs the right type of coaching and coaching that matches the issues a parent is experiencing with a student or adult.
The Four Different Types of Parent Coaching
Coaching that is focused on the parent’s goals for their self-determined and self-identified needs is similar to the partnership found in traditional coaching. The parent envisions a change and a coach collaborates to create the space to make success possible. It is surprisingly simple and very satisfying. Parents usually enjoy both action steps and a shift in their mindset and awareness of all aspects of their lives. Receiving coaching can create a lifestyle that feels real and true for you, whatever that is.
Coaching on a Pre-determined Topic
Coaching that is topic focused or psycho-educational is determined in advance by the coach or a program providing the coaching. It might even have a very specific curriculum to work through. One might or might not be able to individualize their goals due to the content approach. For example, some might want to learn how to utilize Time Out as a technique or while others seek techniques on parenting around screen time and use of technology or gaming.
Coaching from a Certain Lens or Style of Parenting
Coaching that is style focused is determined in advance by the coach who is or claims to be an expert in a parenting approach that has been designed for a child, teen or young adult with certain issues. This can also be referred to as Parent Training. Sometimes this is referred to as Parent Instruction. Trends and advice on how to parent come and go. Child Mind Institute has this to say about choosing a parent training program. Not every style works for every parent or every child or teen. One example for parents of young children with difficult behaviors is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy or PCIT. For older children and teens, some look to the Teaching Family Model also used in quality residential programs.
Coaching Focused on Parent Healing
Parenting trauma is a thing; therefore, parent healing is a thing too. Psychology Today recognizes some mothers of Autism have stress profiles similar to some of those who have been in combat. Coaching for parenting trauma can help a parent restore their calm and not be constantly triggered when their body have stored years of difficult parenting memories due to challenges related to a child’s actions. Some have used Heart Math to nurture their heart to resilience and increasing their capacity for emotional regulation after trauma.
